Hidden Moon by Afton Locke

Hidden Moon (Book 4 in the Hot Moon Rising Series)
From Decadent Publishing
by Afton Locke
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Alan Shifflett left his old pack due to an inherited mutation that makes him a violent freak. He lives a dull life farther north, suppressing his shifts. But when his father can no longer run Moonlight Diner due to failing health, Alan is compelled to rejoin what’s left of his pack in Florida and face his weakness.
Shelley Fields, once a spoiled high school beauty queen, has dedicated her life to helping her pack. In public, she ridiculed Alan because of peer pressure, but secretly, she longed for her mate. When he returns, she confesses her true feelings, but Alan has no intention of staying where he doesn’t belong.
Meanwhile, Curtis—his rival—has a score to settle, and threats from a rival pack are standing everyone’s fur on end. Terrified of the beast inside, Alan is desperate to return to his safe life, but is leaving his mate, kin, and pack in danger worth the price?

Rating: 3.5*

Being different is not a bad thing but you and those around you need to accept being different.  This didn't happen for shifter Allan, who has a genetic mutation that he and his pack has never accepted.  He chose to distance himself from the pack and himself.  Coming back when his father is ill is a test of everything that he is.

Shelley has always known that Allan is her mate but let the feelings of the pack get in the way and lead her astray.  Now that he is back she is determined to show him what he means to her.

With the romantic tensions, as well as the tension from another pack encroaching on their territory, high, this was a good shifter read.  There were parts that I wanted to read more about, which might have made this a great read.  I did like the characters and the small town feeling that came through strongly.
